White Man's Burden

A political cartoonist attempts to make a statement about serious issues and or events occurring throughout the world.

When analyzing a political cartoon there are things you should look at to get a better idea of what is going on:
1. Activities
2. Symbols and objects
3. People (Nationalities, groups)
4. Expressions (Body Language)
5. Words

Examine the political cartoons above and try listing some or all of these 5 aspects for each. What view point does the cartoonist have about the White Man's Burden in each of the cartoons? Is it positive or negative and why?

  1. The whit mans burden has the words in the document it also says ignorance civilizations etc. The Europeans with the American stripes in his hat is working his way up to civilization and the African are sitting there. They see the political cartoon as positive imperialism because even tho they are tired they see that they are getting closer to a new civilization.

  2. In the left picture, slaves carry uncle sam and other people, they carrying them somewhere, slaves look tired. In the right picture uncle sam and a british are carrying the slaves, they going into a new cilvilization, the slaves are angry, and etc. Is posotive and negative because both pictures mean different things. In the left is negative because the slaves are carrying the people with power. In the right is posotive because the slaves are taking revenge.
